What Has Changed For Honey In the Dinghy?

May 24, 2017 //  by Pamela

Here’s Honey coming back to our sailboat, “Meander” in February 2017.

Honey the golden retriever rides the dinghy back to Meander.
These early morning “walks” are exhausting. Hurry up, my bed is waiting for me.

And here’s Honey riding in the dinghy in May 2017.

Honey the golden retriever comes back to Meander in a dinghy.
Faster, faster! Someone is waiting for us. And I think she has cookies!

Yes, the weather is different. And the time of day. And even the state.

But there’s another big difference.

Something has changed for Honey when she’s riding the dinghy. Can you guess what it is?

She looks braver… like she’s captain of her boat!

Yep, she’s finally competing with all those crazy Labradors for champion boat dog!

That’s awesome! Good for her and you too. ?

Looks to me like she’s gotten used to it and learned to enjoy it.

For once, she doesn’t look like she’s just humoring me with this boat thing. πŸ™‚

    She loves it.

      At last!

I would say she has gotten comfortable with it. Or you got better treats. πŸ˜‰

    • Pamela

      May 24, 2017 at 5:06 PM

All the treats in the world wouldn’t get her out of the cockpit when she was having none of the dinghy. :0

        May 25, 2017 at 3:33 PM

Maybe it’s because Mike took off the hat….LOL

She has developed more courage than I ever would in that situation

    • Pamela

      May 24, 2017 at 5:19 PM

Maybe you just never had enough yummy treats? πŸ™‚

She looks much more attentive in the dinghy. πŸ™‚

She’s finally started putting her paws up on the seat to get a better view!

  7. Cheryl Chervitz

She doesn’t look as scared and she’s ready to see whats on the other side.

    • Pamela

      May 24, 2017 at 5:22 PM

We wouldn’t be doing so many dinghy rides if she was terribly scared. But now she even seems to look forward to it.

    May 24, 2017 at 1:42 PM

She looks like she has gained confidence in herself and the ride.

    • Pamela

      May 24, 2017 at 5:24 PM

      Well put. That’s exactly it.

  9. Taryn

    May 24, 2017 at 3:06 PM

LOL! Everyone is commenting on her comfort level. To me, it looked like you had built her a platform so she could sit higher and more comfortably. Or maybe she is sitting up on a bench seat made for a person instead of sitting on the floor of the dinghy. Of course that could speak to her level of comfort as she is no longer afraid of falling out.

    • Pamela

      May 24, 2017 at 5:28 PM

Ding, ding, ding! You got it. She’s finally putting her paws up on the seat to get a better view instead of sitting quietly in the boat.Hooray!

She seems to love it, not sure what else is different.

    • Pamela

      May 24, 2017 at 5:28 PM

She does love it. And that’s a change that has been slowly coming over the past few months.

I think she finally got her “sea legs ” there!!! She looks happy! Guess it would take a period of adjustment!

    • Pamela

      May 26, 2017 at 7:01 AM

It took a big adjustment for all of us. πŸ™‚

  12. Jan K

    May 24, 2017 at 6:30 PM

She looks so much more confident and relaxed, judging by the fact that she is sitting up so much higher and not crouching down low. Yay for Honey!

    • Pamela

      May 26, 2017 at 7:01 AM

She’s actually putting her front paws up on the seat so she can sniff and see better!

  13. Sandy Kubillus

    May 24, 2017 at 10:50 PM

I think she’s a lot warmer! May is a much nicer month to be in a boat than February!

    • Pamela

      May 26, 2017 at 7:07 AM

You can say that again! Although even when we’re sailing on a 30 degree day, Honey’s coat keeps her much warmer than mine does. πŸ™‚

  14. Johnny

    May 24, 2017 at 10:55 PM

Honey, you’re so brave! Even I’m a bit iffy with boats!

    • Pamela

      May 26, 2017 at 7:14 AM

When boats take you to your favorite places, it’s easy to become less “iffy.” Honey finally associates the dinghy with beaches where she can roll in dead fish.

But I’m guessing that wouldn’t do it for you, eh?

  15. Kirsten Stade

    May 24, 2017 at 11:28 PM

She looks much more comfortable! That is impressive…my dog-boat experiences have been much different πŸ™‚

    • Pamela

      May 26, 2017 at 7:15 AM

Honey is always a little on the timid side. So it always takes her a while to feel really comfortable with new things. We just try to take it slow.

And she’s probably relieved we didn’t decide to go on a cross-country bike trip so she’d have to ride in the bike cart she hated so much. πŸ™‚

  16. Kim Brooks

    May 24, 2017 at 11:51 PM

Yep – she is definitely enjoying her time in the dinghy now – more than before.

    • Pamela

      May 26, 2017 at 7:18 AM

I guess it goes to show we can all adjust to new things given enough time. In truth, we humans were pretty scared on the boat the first year ourselves. :0

    May 25, 2017 at 7:45 AM

she’s got confidence!! Go Honey. She’s adapted and now this is “HER life” and she’s grabbed boat life by the tail – doing her thing! So happy for her.

    • Pamela

      May 26, 2017 at 7:20 AM

I KNOW! I can’t believe this is the same pup who wouldn’t walk on a ramp covered in liver treats or hop into a bike cart on a bet!

    May 25, 2017 at 8:56 AM

YAY for Honey – and for you and Mike for patiently helping her build her confidence!

    • Pamela

      May 26, 2017 at 7:21 AM

Hey, between Honey and Mike (not to mention myself), I got plenty of training experience in our first two years on the boat. πŸ™‚

Hmmm, I can’t guess what is different. I saw you at the BlogPaws conference in one of the sessions but I didn’t get a chance to meet you! I hope you had a great time, we sure did.

I never meet all the people I want to. And I had less time to socialize this year since I stayed at a marina instead of the hotel.

Perhaps we’ll meet IRL at a future BlogPaws?

Is the harness new? Perhaps it is to hold her in the dinghy? I agree with everyone who says that she looks much happier in April than in Feb!

Confident Honey is look-ing good! Way to go.
