Wet Dog Smell in Aromaround

March 30, 2012 //  by Pamela

Golden Retriever chewing a stick in the sunshine of Cape May.
There's nothing better than a puppy in the sunshine. You won't find that in Seattle very often.

I told my friend Glenda that I was pushing Cape May, New Jersey as the best city for pet travelers and was locked in a hot battle with Seattle, Washington for the title.

Glenda’s no fool. She asked, “Doesn’t it rain all the time there? Who wants to visit a city that smells like wet dog?”

So wise, Glenda. So wise.

Every time I think of Seattle now, I get the distinctive smell of wet dog in my nose. Don’t you?

Here’s a wet dog video to get you thinking. And yes, it was taken in Washington state.

Can you smell wet dog? I thought so.

If you prefer your dogs dry and in the sunshine, vote for Cape May as the best city for pet travelers.

I just realized that had Halifax made it all the way, it would have eventually been paired with Cape May in the final. Whew! Glad we avoided that, eh? πŸ˜‰ Halifax probably matches Seattle in precipitation so I can’t join in the heckling on that count.

    Go Cape May!

I heard from several people that they were hoping we wouldn’t face off against each other for fear their heads would explode. πŸ™‚

I’m so glad you submitted Halifax. I loved reading your post and immediately brought up google maps to check out the route. Somehow I think it would be easier (and more fun) to sail to Halifax than drive.

Things aren’t looking good for Cape May against Seattle. But it’s been a fun ride.

Sailing would be much more fun! There used to be a ferry that connected Nova Scotia to Maine but the current government got rid of it due to rising costs. Now one is forced to drive all the way through New Brunswick in order to take the ferry to Maine from there. But who wants to go through that, er, interesting province?

I have my fingers crossed for you!

Oh great, wet dog AND fishy smell…. Hmm, I think you’ve found your opening here, Pamela. πŸ™‚

Did anybody else get a “Waiting for Godot” vibe out of that video? πŸ˜‰

Hmmmm, I was thinking the Tempest at first. But you’re right. It is pretty existential.

There were fish swimming across the road. Like fish swimming. Are you kidding me? I have enough trouble avoiding the freaking squirrels while I’m driving, never mind adding fish to the mix!!

And just think of how interesting Sampson and Delilah would find all that extra motion. πŸ™‚

Wait, are you saying wet dog smell is a bad thing?

At home it’s great. I’m not sure I’d pay $600 for a plane ticket just to go somewhere to smell it. πŸ™‚

No thanks, Seattle – you are a lovely city in a lovely state but I get enough precip. and flooding right here in southeast MO; don’t need anymore. My vote stays with Cape May. The dog was quite clever, “just doing my job, ma’am,” though the fish were swimming right to him :).

Eau de Wet Dog is something I try to avoid at all costs! I am rooting for you and I’ve voted for Cape May all along!

That video is so weird! It seems like the dog is walking in place, doesn’t it? I was thinking, will he EVER get there? Then the video faded away and I’m wondering if that poor dog is out there somewhere still walking.
