Holiday Songs Are Better With Dogs

Isn’t everything better with dogs?

Okay, maybe not peanut butter sandwiches. I’ve eaten so much of Honey’s hair I’m coughing up fur balls.

But everything else is better with dogs. Especially holiday songs.

Golden Retriever and Christmas Tree

You needed one finishing touch to make the tree perfect: me.

Inspiration In A Fur Coat

In an attempt to pretend winter isn’t actually a dark, gloomy season meant to be endured until those sweet, sweet five minutes of summer arrive, Ithaca hosts some winter festivals.

This past weekend was the ice carving festival.

Man sitting on ice bench.

I love my husband. But don’t you think this picture would be even better with Honey in it too?

I always go and enjoy it. Especially since the presence of thousands of pounds of ice carved into beautiful shapes is a sure promise that warmer weather is coming. After all, we couldn’t possibly have all that lovely frozen art last for more than a day.

This year, our no-dogs-allowed outdoor pedestrian mall had some special guests—a dog sled team.

Sled dogs on the Ithaca commons.

We have dozens of people wielding chain saws and no one can stop looking at the dogs. Time to make the Commons dog friendly, Ithaca.

I was so inspired to see them, I burst out into spontaneous song.

Mushing In A Winter Wonderland

[Sing along by clicking here for musical accompaniment.]

Huskies sing
are you listening
as they howl
ears are blistering
Their traces are right
the trail is packed tight
mushing in a winter wonderland

Gone away is the dirt trail
here to stay is the snow swale
They bark a loud song
as we ride along
mushing in a winter wonderland

In the next town we can thaw some kibble
Warm it up and gobble it all down
Then say let’s get going
on the snow trail
‘Cuz spring is lurking soon to shut us down

Later on
we feel tired
in our dreams, we’ll be wired
To go the next day
we’ll run all the way
mushing in a winter wonderland

[musical break – 2 verses]

In the next town we will meet a new team
Bark some trash talk, give a toothy frown
We’ll make fun of all those furry losers
And whip their fuzzy butts without a sound

When it snows
ain’t it thrilling
As one nose, smell the chilling
We’ll race and we’ll play
the husky dog way
mushing in a winter wonderland

Sled dogs on the Ithaca commons.

Okay, enough with the public appearances. Time to run.

Yep, I definitely like my lyrics better. How about you?

    “Later on, we’ll …conspire.”
Don’t those idiots have a dictionary?

  7. Great job!

  8. I need some doggy aspirin…just finished a 20 minute car ride with Mom singing along to the carols on the radio. Our howling would be so much nicer! Bummer they let the sled pups into the event, but not Honey! I could imagine lots of irresponsible owners letting dogs pee on the beautiful ice sculptures which would be real bad.

  9. Genius, my dear!

  10. DEFINITELY like yours better!! I’m still trying to shed my Ebenezer Scrooge/Grinch spirit and your verses made me laugh like all the Whos in Whoville.

  11. I love that you have included the musical break – sign of a true professional!!

  12. Fantastic! The only think that would make the lyrics better is if you were singing the song at the ice carving festival with the dog sled team! 😉

  13. Love it! And love those beautiful dogs!

  14. Your lyrics are perfect! I do wish you had recorded yourself singing along!
