12 Reasons Dogs Make the Best Friends

Dogs shouldn’t replace people in our lives. We have plenty of love for both.

But when I think of the behavior of some of my human “friends” over the years, it’s very tempting.

12 Reasons Your Dog is a Better Best Friend than Your (Human) Best Friend

Honey the Golden Retriever naps on a chair.

You’d be a much better friend if you didn’t always put your camera in my face when I’m trying to take a nap.

Human friends? You better watch out. Because my dog…

doesn’t borrow my best outfit, get a stain on it, and forget to mention it until she sees me wearing it.

has never stolen a boyfriend.

lets me complain about my bad day without once telling me how it’s all my own fault and what I should do to fix it.

never invites me out for lunch and then quibbles over the check before rounding what we owe to the nearest third of a penny (yes, this has actually happened).

keeps me company while I’m watching the long foreign film that everyone else finds boring.

doesn’t look at the avocado, raw fish, or soft-shelled crab sandwich I’m enjoying and say, “Ewww, I don’t know how you can eat that!”

walks for miles without complaining about her feet hurting because she chose her shoes for looks instead of comfort.

never makes me feel like I need to clean my house for her.

Honey the Golden Retriever sleeps in a tent.

And you’d be an even better friend if you let me sleep on your legs all the time and not just when we’re camping.

is happy to go camping with me, even in the rain, without complaining about bugs, bird songs waking her up, and dirt.

never fights about politics.

is always happy to see me.

doesn’t throw it in my face that she’s much better looking than I am.

I’d keep going. But my best friend is drooling on my leg and needs something to eat. And then I’ve got to feed my dog.

Your Turn: What makes your dog a better best friend than any human?

  1. because he acts excited to see me whether I am gone for 5 days or 5 minutes, he never has a bored look that says, “Oh, you’re back?” It’s “Ohhhhhhhhhhh!!!! You’re BACK!!!!”

  2. and I’m an idiot…you just mentioned that one. I didn’t get enough sleep last night and I have a slow moving computer and can’t do anything and am in a FOUL mood lol…..that’s it…….my dog could care less about technology or the fact that I haven’t let him update his blog since Wednesday…..that’s it!

    • Hey, if it’s a good reason, it’s a good reason. I wouldn’t be surprised to see everyone come here and share the same thing. :)

Sorry it’s been a rough week. I was wondering what you were up to. Hope things look up soon!

And hey, at least you have Dakota.

  3. Jack is a good friend because he always wants to do whatever I want to do – there’s no compromising on the movie or restaurant or hiking trail…he’s just happy to be with me wherever we’re going even if it’s down the street to the mailbox and back.

    • I love it! And even better, there’s no “What do you want to do?” “I don’t know, what do you want to do?” discussions.

      • Our dog trainer used to say about Jack “Whatever you are doing right now is Jack’s FAVORITE thing to do”. Makes me laugh because that is exactly what he’s like.

  4. Sue @ The Golden Life says:

I have 3 best friends — Callie, Shadow, and Ducky Doodle — and while I wouldn’t say they’re “better” best friends than my 3 human ones, just different than, they each have a special place in my heart that no human could ever occupy. My girls are ALWAYS happy to see me, even if I just came back into the living room after pouring myself a cup of coffee. Of course, Shadow and Ducky just follow me into the kitchen, but you know what I mean. Of course, there have been those “friends” in my past life who make vultures and vampires seem like better friends. As in “give me your full loyalty but don’t dare ask for or expect mine in return”. My dogs will always be there for me, even if only in Spirit.

  5. Us dogs are always there for mom! Even cats aren’t as reliable. We sense emotions and know when our human needs a snuggle, us dogs are just the best!

  6. The glass is always half full……we always look to the positive unlike some we know. Have a super Saturday.
    Best wishes Molly

  7. he didn’t tell me to get rid of him when he saw how many thousands I was spending on a lawyer.

when he eats near me he doesn’t keep looking at his smartphone to see it he missed something, probably a Twitter post reporting what his friend had for breakfast.

  8. I love this post!
I make a great best friend cos I never tell mummy how many grey hairs or wrinkles she has (yes some of her friends have pointed them out before!) or commented about her having a bad hair day (which she has all the time lol)

  9. I love these! Here’s one from a human friend some time back… Complains about people who don’t have good Christian values but also complains that Vick was kicked out of the game just because of the dog-fighting thing. I guess if someone is really good at sports, then it is okay that they have no respect for God’s creatures?

  10. My dogs are my best friends, because they can make me forget about anything that’s bothering me with a smile and the wag of a tale. Every single time I’m feeling down, I just lay on the floor; before I know it, I’m surrounded by three dogs who are only too happy to distract me :)

  11. There are thousands of reasons. But one of my favorite things about dogs is that they don’t have a million expectations of me. There is no ‘you haven’t called me in ages’ etc . For example, when I go on holiday and they don’t see me for a week or two, when we reunite, everyone’s happy. When I come home, and I am too tired to be funny, or witty, or intellectual, or any of those things that comprise a personality, they still want to hang out with me.

  12. Jen says that dogs teach her to be a better human. What does that mean? I think she’d want to be a dog!

  13. Because no matter what I want to do my dog is an eager and enthusiastic companion…He’s just as happy to spend a quiet Sunday at home as he is to go anywhere as long as he’s with me…You just can’t beat that kind of friendship

  14. Doesn’t have a stroke and create an argument when your daughter schedules her wedding the month before her own daughter, stating your daughter is trying to steal her daughter’s spotlight.

BTW the wedding was called off.

  15. Frankie and Beryl would be my best friends even if they weren’t good for me, but they are good for me … they get me out of the house and off to the beach for some fresh air and exercise. On those days when I’m just too physically and mentally tired to make the effort, even for them, they don’t complain or nag. I love my dogs :)

    My dogs is my friends
And my family my world love them till death do us part!! Spotti and Buddy
