Although they weren’t as enthusiastic about the rest of the year, the 4th of July festivities were a BIG deal, and my parents also dragged us kids into every contest. My sisters were much better athletes. I don’t think I ever won a little trophy for the races. My cruelest memories were of (ugh!) being forced to wear my Easter Dress and enter the “Beauty Pageant”, shoved up on stage into the “Most Freckles” contest, and finally the “Talent Contest” in which I had to sing… which I was good at, but had never dealt with a microphone before and treated the audience to three minutes of mic feedback! I’m sure if you provided me with a wizard costume, it could have helped! Thanks for the memories.
