Snoopy Really is a Beagle

Layla the foster beagle looks like Snoopy the vulture.

Layla’s best impression of Snoopy’s vulture impression.

I think these pictures need an explanation.

Yeah, I know it’s Wordless Wednesday. So sue me.

Snoopy is a Beagle?

In the Charlie Brown comic strip, Snoopy was always described as a Beagle.

I didn’t get it. He had that huge bulbous nose and he was all white. There was nothing about Snoopy that said “Beagle” to me.

But now that I’m living with a Beagle mix (meet my foster dog, Layla), I understand.

In the first picture, you’ll see Layla doing her best imitation of Snoopy’s vulture pose.

No, she doesn’t quite have Snoopy’s menacing glare. But she sure has that slumpy posture down. And she’ll sit like this for minutes at a time.

In the second picture, you’ll see that Layla likes hanging out on top of the couch. Just like Snoopy hangs out on top of his dog house. She’ll even curl up and sleep there, just like Snoopy.

So maybe it’s not looks that make you a Beagle. Maybe it’s behavior.

And in that case, Snoopy really is a Beagle after all. Just like Layla.

Does your dog ever act like a cartoon character? Could he have his own strip?

  1. I never thought Snoopy was particularly beagle-like either, but looks like you’ve solved the mystery:-)

  2. your vulture photo is a classic lol……Snoopy was (and is) one of my faves!

  3. Top of the dog house indeed Snoopy.
    Have a wonderful Wednesday.
    Best wishes Molly

  4. She does have those “snoopy” postures. :)

I imagine my Thumper as Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story. A bit over the top, naive, and full of himself. Lightning is like Woody – a bit nervous, a worrier, a rule follower. Have a good Wednesday.

  5. Annabelle Essert (@RainbowCatsx8) says:

What a cutie Layla is! Snoopy would be proud to be channeled by her. Love & happy purring from RainbowCatsx8

  6. Those are the perfect imitations of Snoopy. Cute.

  7. That is so funny! You’re so adorable Layla. 😀

  8. We sometimes give Sampson a voice like Marmaduke, mostly because he’s big and doofy at times. :-)

  9. Definitive proof!
Out of curiosity I looked it up and found this info on the white beagle

  10. As long as she doesn’t start imitating Snoopy as the Red Baron you should be okay.

  11. I remember the first time I walked down the hall and saw Junebug sitting on the back of the couch, hunched over like Snoopy over his typewriter. I had that same “a-ha” moment. I think I posted something on FB that night along the lines of “Snoopy really was a Beagle”. Like you, I had never thought he looked like one, but there’s that silhouette that Junebug gets sometimes that is EXACTLY like Snoopy.
She also loves being on the back of the couch, and sleeping on her back (though not at the same time, she’d totally roll off the couch if she tried to sleep on her back on the back of the couch), just like Snoopy.

  12. The way Charles Schultz drew Snoopy changed somewhat through the years. I think the Snoopy we all remember was the most commercial and marketable for licensing. Snoopy was many times over a millionaire.

  13. Sue Oakes says:

To Me, at least, Snoopy was ALWAYS a Beagle, and as the song says: “A funny-lookin dog with a big black nose”. Have always loved Snoopy, and he’s been a hero to ALL of my dogs — from the first one in 1957 to the most recent addition in 2012. After all, how many dogs do you know can turn a dog house into a Sopwith Camel and go after and shoot down the Red Baron? Or be friends with a little yellow Canary that can fly upside down? :-)

  14. Hmmm, I need to question your conclusion because I am definitely not a Beagle (or Beagle mix) and I love standing, sitting and napping on the top (back) of the couch…so I don’t know if that is only a Beagle trait. I think it is a smaller-dog trait…it gives us a better vantage point.
    Oz (and Gina)

  15. I never thought of it that way :) I thought Snoopy had some black on him…like his ears or something?

  16. Yeah, I never did get that he was black and white. But otherwise he DID seem beagle-y. I was heavily into beagles at one point, and if I ended up with one I am certain I would be again. They are such friendly, gregarious little people.

  17. Funny, I was just commenting on this on I Still Want More Puppies the other day. We grew up with a beagle, and my hubs and I had a beagle for our first dog. Charles Schultz knew what the heck he was doing! The vulture pose is so spot-on — our beagle did that all the time (our current beagle-mix, Rita, does it too). And our beagle also loved to be up on the back of the sofa, just like Snoopy up on his house. And… the thing where Snoopy sometimes leaps out and grabs at a passing ankle – our beagle totally did that if she thought she was being ignored. Many times she tried to trip me up!

  18. We never understood how snoopy was a beagle, his colors don’t fit. But he is cute just like your Layla. I guess they can do anything in cartoon world. lol Happy WW!

  19. More often its the cat that acts like a cartoon character… as in Get Fuzzy!

  20. That really is a vulture pose.

If Georgia was a cartoon strip, she’d be Garfield.

  21. Yep, our mom wuz the same way fur a long time. BUTT egspeshally when we moved in she cood c the Beagle b-havior in Snoopy. We just joined in the Blog Hop so we iz goin’hoppin’around the blogz an’we landed here. We iz Team Beaglebratz – Shiloh’n Diva Shasta an’our mom Kim. HOWDY!

  22. Our dogs could DEFINITELY be in their own cartoon strip, but I can’t think of any cartoon characters that currently exist that remind me of them. Sometimes, I feel like our whole life could be a comic strip or a reality show! lol

  23. Yes, I’m a beagle and I do act like Snoopy. I think I also have Snoopy’s sense of adventure and I like to seek things out too! My peep says I’m nosy, but really I’m just checking things out. Sleeping on top of the couch is one of my favorite things to do too!
    Have a wagging week

  24. I actually have seen black and white beagles, though not very often. My local shelter always has a beagle or two in temporary residence and the odd black and white one will come through. I love how closely Layla resembles Snoopy in that first picture! Does she dream of aviation glory as well?

  25. I grew up with beagles, so they have a special place in my heart. There actually are bi-colored and tri-colored beagles – Snoopy was the former, Layla is clearly the latter. I also think of Snoopy’s bulbous nose as more of a metaphor for the fact that these guys are driven by their sense of smell. Oh, and those velvety ears, ya just gotta love ’em!

  26. Layla is precious and ALL BEAGLE! Koly does that same slump. and the “catwalk” behind the couch that over looks the stairs is his favourite spot. It’s a beagle thing, apparently.
