Honey Gets Dressed for Her Date

I wished I had captured it on camera. But I’ll try to describe it for you.

Honey the golden retriever waits at the front door for her date.

Someday my prince will come. Hopefully with a squeaky or a box of biscuits.

As Honey and I walked down the stairs, I heard a noise outside. The mailman was just coming up the porch steps. Honey looked up and saw him through the front window.

She ran over to the toy box beside the door, anticipating him coming in to see her.

First she picked out a fleece tug toy, thought about it, and dropped it. Then she picked up a ball. Nope, that’s not right either.

Finally, she found her squeaky lion. Yep, that’s the one. She stood in front of the door, lion in her mouth, filled with hope.

But the mailman was gone.

Honey the Golden Retriever loves her squeaky lion dog toy.

A lady just isn’t dressed without her lion.

Honey, you spent too much time getting dressed for your date. You missed it.

You have to learn that any man worth having will love you just the way you are. No matter what you’re carrying in your mouth.

Your Turn: Have you seen your dog doing something lately that you wished you had caught on camera? Please share.

  1. This is kind of gross, but for My Brown Newfies Nat’l Slobber Day, I’ve been trying to catch Jack slobbering. He had a really good one going the other night all the way to the floor, but no camera. Such a missed opportunity.

      From the Husband:
I want to teach Honey that trick. If we can work with her to get the drool to bead, it would look just like a string of pearls. Very elegant for her next date with the mailman.

I’ll always regret not being ready when a friend’s old dog stood in the open sliding door, the sun low in the west, shining on her beautiful golden face sprinkled with the sugar of old age, but high enough to make the background very dark. The lighting was perfect. I did get a nice shot a few minutes later, but it wasn’t as perfect. It was the last chance I had to photograph her.

  3. I can totally see Honey doing this . . Cali used to do the same thing :)

  4. This made me so happy. I can totally picture it. And who is the pup in your header? he or she looks exactly like my Lady – it confused the heck out of me for a minute! Sara

    • The dog in the header is my beloved Shadow. She lived with me before Honey.

I recently shared her story here: http://www.somethingwagging.com/your-dog-doesnt-know-he-has-cancer/. She was a beauty and I still miss her.

We have no information about Shadow’s breed background. Do you know what is in Lady’s mix?

      • I’m so sorry. Lady is almost 15 and she’s got some health issues. We call her a Rottador :-) She and her brother, Bear, who left me in 2011, are thought to be chow, lab and rottweiler. Even though they were the same litter, Bear was 100 pounds and Lady has never quite been able to hit 50. He had a thicker wavier Chow coat, and she has the lab’s smoothness. They had identical marketings, just like your Shadow. And the very best personalities I’ve ever known in a dog. (I just reposted a photo of Lady on the BB Facebook page, if you want to see how crazy the likeness is.) Sara

  5. When Koly & Fe are excited about something, they often do a turn or two in perfect unisom. The only catch is that you never know when it’s coming and I NEVER have the camera out to capture it. It’s awful.

  6. Rumpy does that sometimes when we’re getting ready to go outside. No one’s coming… he just wants to share the experience with his toy.

  7. Awe! That’s so cute, Honey. Maya and Pierson just bark when the UPS guy or gal comes. They try to crowd the door, too, but we are working on manners.

  8. Since I started blogging, Mom is pretty good about capturing moments we would never have captured before my blog started, but now and then she realizes when it is too late that she should have captured something like the other day when Bailie beat up and busted out of her pop up kennel.

  9. I’m always missing candid shots because I’ve usually got the wrong lens on my camera and by the time I change it the moment is over.

That’s a Greyhound trait, grabbing a toy to give to visitors :) It’s not one Beryl has though. She expects the presents, lol!

  10. O bless her, tell her men ain’t worth it! She can join my singles gal club, in fact it would be so much more fun with her there!!

  11. Every. Single. Day. I need a Delilah cam. Just to record her antics, she cracks me up.

  12. That’s one of my favorite things about golden retrievers….they have to run to pick something up to show off when company comes.
